John Gilbert is a former SME CEO. He has built and run enterprises, been part of creative and professional leadership teams and his commercial experience goes back to his teens as a management trainee with Goodyear Tyre & Rubber. He is also a lawyer and former journalist.

John was Chief Executive (and owner) of several manufacturing and distribution businesses for 16 years until their 2006 sale; he co-founded issues management company GPS & Associates and he practised commercial law for 9 years, beginning his legal career with Allen Allen & Hemsley in Sydney in the 1980s.

John held ministerial appointments to the boards of Sydney College of the Arts and the NSW Institute of the Arts. He is a visiting lecturer in the Law School at UNSW and is a former visiting lecturer in law at the University of Technology, Sydney.

He is also a former head of Media Awareness Training with Film Australia, is a former Federal Parliamentary political correspondent with the ABC (for current affairs radio programs "AM" and "PM") and the 10 Television Network. He compered national media programs "Dateline" on SBS Television and "Tuesday Dispatch" on ABC Radio National.

John is a former long-term member of TEC.
