A replica by a local printing company of an 18th century manuscript that marks 70 years of Australia-Canada diplomatic relations was awarded a prestigious Gold PICA award on Friday 8th October.

Hyde Park Press, based in Richmond, received the Gold Printing Industries Craftsmanship Award (PICA) for their reproduction of Sir Joseph Banks' A Voyage to Newfoundland from April to November 17th 1766.

"We are absolutely thrilled to be recognised for our efforts involved in this incredible project. It was fantastic to be part of creating a facsimile copy of this historical journal by using the latest digital technology , leather binding and tooling as contained in the original manuscript," Director  of Hyde Park Press, Barry Davis, said.

Now, the book-binding specialist is looking forward to raising the profile of his company around the country, thanks to the recognition of the PICA award and advice from the world's leading CEO member organisation, The Executive Connection (TEC).

"A TEC guest speaker recently discussed the importance of showcasing accolades and achievements such as this as a means of gaining recognition and ultimately perpetuating the cycle of success. This lesson comes at a good time!" Mr Davis said.

"One of the advantages of TEC is access to new and fresh ideas which helps develop the drive and innovation required to secure and excel in incredible projects such as this," Mr Davis said.

His Excellency Mr Justin Brown, Australia's High Commissioner to Canada, approached The Royal Geographical Society of South Australia, who has owned the manuscript since 1905, with the proposal and sourced local suppliers to make it a reality.

Hyde Park Press was selected to be responsible for preparing and formatting the images for digital printing, as well as printing the facsimile edition to match the original manuscript.

Other businesses involved in the project include: Orange Lane Studios at Norwood and Anthony Zammit at Kidman Park.

Bound in rough calf with gilt clasps, the original journal can be viewed in the Mortlock Wing of the State Library of South Australia.

Hyde Park Press was established in 1930, in small premises in the suburb of Hyde Park, South Australia. Hyde Park Press is one of Australia's leading printers, employing the latest prepress equipment, printing presses, bindery machines and management information technology.

The PICA awards celebrate excellence in the print, packaging and visual communications industry in South Australia and the Northern Territory, and recognise the special efforts of the industry by presenting awards for outstanding work.
