Time Management and Employee Wellbeing a Focus for Business Leaders in 2011

January, 2011

It is that time of year again where we look back on the year past and wonder where the time went. It's a time where we reflect on what we have achieved and what we wish to achieve for the year ahead.

The most popular New Year's resolutions are spending more time with the family, losing weight, enjoying life and quitting smoking.

So what does the business- minded have on the agenda for success in the New Year? The Executive Connection (TEC), a peer-to-peer support organisation for CEOs and Senior Executives, tells us that business leaders are thinking about how to strike the work life balance in the New Year, for themselves and their staff. In particular, TEC members are concerned about how to make time for fitness, the family, to stay organised, continue to develop professionally and maintain all important working relationships.

'Our members often report feeling like they are in a constant battle with the clock, so achieving a balance between work and personal commitments is a common concern, and a concern they have for their employees,' South Australian TEC Chair, Jerry Kleeman, said.

Leah Brown from Insite Injury Management Group talks about her New Year's resolutions for 2011, for herself and her business. 'I would love to be able to learn how to say no once in a while. It is great that business is busy and fast paced but I find that agreeing to take on every opportunity means that I am so stretched I only have a limited amount of time to spend with family and friends.'

Leah expressed the importance of having a network of like minded people to offer advice, 'I am fortunate enough to be a part of a peer support group, The Executive Connection [TEC], through which I met people in the same situation as myself who gave me the advice to be passionate about what is important to me personally and my business and say no to the rest.'

Having staff succeed in this balancing act has also emerged as a concern for managers. 'While I think about my personal New Year's resolutions, at the same time I think about the goals for Insite to move forward in 2011. I think a good start to greater efficiency is addressing the work life balance concerns for my staff as well,' Leah said.

'My peers and I recently discussed in one of our TEC group meetings the importance of providing workable conditions for our staff to maintain a healthy lifestyle with time for family and a social life. Some of my peers have aimed to do this by making working hours more flexible.'

'I think the best way to achieve any goal you set for yourself is to have a network of like-minded people around you. I have used my peers at TEC to bounce ideas off and they have been able to share their past experiences with me.'
